The Movement Against
YOUTH VIOLENCE
Continues!
The Mission sponsored a
"Stop the Violence" movement
led by and targeting youth. This
initiative allowed youth to
show their opposition to violent
behaviors by carrying a "Stop the
Violence" Bookmark and outlines a
program through which youth can have
a voice. The Mission encouraged youth
to share what they think should be done
to keep them safe. Click here for more

Annual Holiday Programs Outreach to Many!
The Mission's "Adopt-A-Family" Project successfully provided voucher-certificates to 50-plus area families to ensure their
Christmas plans included a special holiday meal. The vouchers allowed the families to purchase a turkey, all the trimmings and
a few staples--hopefully assisting these families with stretching their food stamps. Families who called for services as late as
December 23, 2011 were also assisted. Mission staff made special food drop-offs to their homes. The Annual Holiday
Give-Away Project provided gift cards to 50 families with children to aide with making Christmas possible.
Project Sharing, the Christmas Project held in cooperation with The Honorable Kwame Kenyatta-Detroit City
Councilman, was again a tremendous success! This year, 2011, marked the project's sixth year of operation and the sixth
time the project was able to meet its goal of servicing a minimum of 1,000 City of Detroit residents! The project supplies winter
clothing necessities to underprivileged residents who otherwise has little to no means of purchasing warm clothing accessories
during the season when Michigan temperatures are blistering cold. Through the support of caring people, disadvantaged
residents were given the opportunity to voucher-purchase coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and undergarments.

"Silent Cries 2011" Gala Fund Raiser Huge Success!

EVENT UPDATE
Superb food!... Inspirational performances!...
Insightful and excellent speakers...Recognition of service provided...
that's the formula which contributed to the warm and joyful fellowship experienced by the 150-plus
attendees of this year's Silent Cries Gala. A gay time was had by all. Ticket sales combined with the
sale of raffle tickets and auction items allowed The Mission to meet three-fourths of its 2011
fundraising goal...proof that the right fellowshipping can go a long way even in difficult economic times.
The monies raised will be used to continue the services The Mission provides to domestic violence
and crime victims and their families.
Special "Thank You" to all the event sponsors whose financial donations made this event possible.

The weather outside was cold and sunshiny. Inside, it was warm and inviting.
Exquisite pink and lavender porcelain teapots lined the pink linen tables...tables filled
with matching tea cups and saucers, beautiful flowers, and three-tiered plates
holding delicious pastries and finger sandwiches. Everyone agreed, from the
youngest attendee (aged 9) to the oldest "girl" there(age 17), the tea party setting was
lovely. The Mission wishes to extend a special thank you to the ladies from
Precious Style, event planners extraordinaire, who designed the tea and provided the
fine china Victorian setting and table decorations.
While they did not sit at the tea tables, caring mothers and community members sat
and observed as the all-girl attendees practiced the etiquette of high tea. Tea
etiquette pointers were provided to them by the youth mentoring program's Co-
Directors. The girls were treated to a spoken word reading by local artist Makeda
Yelder entitled "I Deserve," which clearly gave understanding to the outcome of a
healthy self-esteem. Mrs. Honore, a local educator and former resident of Louisiana
where "taking tea" was a common way of life, gave a short and powerful life lesson
entitled "I Am, I Can, I Will." With the soul-stirring song presentation by the Pickens
Children bringing a standing ovation. The afternoon tea was hosted by The Mission's
Executive Director, Nedra Lucas.

Afterwards, Mrs. Lucas expressed that she felt the mission of the tea party had been accomplished. She, the
sponsors, and the program performers, wanted to deliver a special message to the young females living in the
community...and they wanted the message delivered in the most loving and non-judgmental way possible. They
wanted simply to say: We love you...we hear you...we are here for you. The tea party planned by Precious Style
was the perfect environment in which to convey that message.
