YOUTH HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LEVEL OF VIOLENCE OCCURRING IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. SOME KIDS HAVE SUGGESTIONS ABOUT WHAT SHOULD BE DONE. OTHERS FEEL ADULTS SHOULD ASK "THEM" FOR THEIR TAKE ON WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING. YOUTH WANT TO JOIN THE CONVERSATION!
October was violence prevention month. The youth leaders of The Mission's Beating Odds Youth Mentoring Program conducted a youth against violence movement. This movement was designed to show that most youth stand against all acts of violence. Most youth are, in fact, zero-tolerant of bullying and the type of violence the media reports on daily. The violent actions of troubled youth are causing many adults to believe today's youth believe the show of violence is a strength.
We say "No--to the use of violence!" We want to continue the movement and have decided not to limit it to a particular month of the year. Please join us. Follow these simple and easy steps to speak out against youth violence.
TARGET MIDDLE AND/OR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. These are the age groups that deal with violent behaviors on a daily basis. (Statistic: one in 4 kids are bullied each month.)
SIGN YOUR SCHOOL OR CHURCH UP TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS WORTHWHILE MOVEMENT AS A SPONSOR.
a) Sponsors encourage youth ages 11-17 to purchase ($1.00) and carry a "Stop the Violence" Bookmark. Bookmarks should be carried in a way so that they show.
b) Sponsors should encourage participating youth to take the challenge. A short assembly or a program dedicated to the issue of youth violence will have the most impact. (Even a table set up in the lunch room that displays anti-youth literature works to draw attention to the issue. ) Youth should make the pledge written on the bookmark.
“I will model non-judgment kindness to others, and look for what is positive in what is occurring around me. I will wear carry my "Stop the Violence"
bookmark to symbolize this.” Youth who model positive support for their peers for 24-hours and who carry their bookmarks should be rewarded. We suggest an outing or certificates to a popular fast foods restaurant or a gift card to the local movie theatre.
YOUTH FROM PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS, CHURCHES AND YOUTH GROUPS should plan an assembly or program that will have lasting impact. Convene youth leaders from within the school/church/group and ask them to prepare short speeches on the subject of "The Experience of Youth Violence In Our Neighborhood." Include a comment period as part of the program and allow other youth to join the conversation...to share their viewpoints, suggestions and obtain responses from adult leaders about the issue of safety for today's youth. Invite a speaker from The Mission's Speaker's Bureau to provide current and insightful facts and statistics about the problem of youth violence in your specific area.
Now that school is back in session, what is next? What measures are put in place to safeguard youth from bullying or violent behaviors? What does the Public Law against bullying really mean to bullied youth?
"What do the youth have to say?"
STOP THE VIOLENCE!
We beat the odds when--
We treat people fairly, and with respect for who they are.
We speak up for those who are not treated with respect.
We go to school and live in a community where we purposefully treat everyone with respect.
We can be counted on to remind other people when they are not treating others with respect and consideration.
We promise to act against bullying whenever and wherever we see it! ----------------------------------------------------------------- (Cut here & return this card to your student body leadership)
MAKE THE PLEDGE: “I agreed to respect authority and commit myself to a responsible life style that enhances our community. I will carry my bookmark openly to symbolize this.”

Signing up, purchasing bookmarks and carrying (showing) a Stop the Violence Bookmark helps in a big way.
1. Carrying the bookmark brings awareness that the problem has not yet been resolved, and expresses opposition to youth violence. It is also a strong indication of how many youth would appreciate adult intervention with dealing with violent behavior.
2. Purchasing bookmarks from The Mission for a middle school and high school-aged student that you know lets that youth know you care. Ask them to carry and show their bookmark during the month of October 2011.
3. Each bookmark purchased provides funding that continues services for a victimized individual.
QUANTITY AND DONATION COSTS: Individual Bookmarks - $1.00 each Bookmarks (10-20) - $75.00 each Bookmarks (21-35) - $0.60 each Bookmarks (over 35) - $0.50 each

Arrange for a "STOP THE VIOLENCE" Advocate to visit your school/church/group!
Advocate-speakers provide first hand accounts of what it feels like to experience senseless and unprovoked violent acts. They offer advice on how to avoid violence and how to protect one's self and children against this epidemic that is spreading across our country...harming our communities through our children.
